Asva and Philippe Petit on Basses Frequences !

•June 1, 2012 • Leave a Comment

What an honour to announce the release of the forthcoming Asva and Philipe Petit release on my own little label ! The even more surprising info is that I’ll do both at once, since it’ll be a collaboration release ! It is called “Empires should burn…” and will be released on CD and LP, both formats co-released with my brother in arms Small Doses.

Philippe Petit and G. Stuart Dahlquist first came together when Petit’s Strings of Consciousness project opened for ASVA in Paris. The two quickly discovered a profound likemindedness and decided to combine their creative forces and see where that could take them. The pair, each with their own unique and seemingly infinite brand of creativity, formed a unique partnership. However, as Philippe and ASVA both have a long history of interesting collaborations, they decided to bring some guest vocalists to the project. Edward Ka-Spel (Legendary Pink Dots), Jarboe (Swans), and Bryan Lewis Saunders all lent their voices to this album. After a few months of dialogue and collaboration, “Empires Should Burn” was completed and ready to be released into the world.

G. STUART DAHLQUIST formed ASVA in 2003 in the wake of the demise of Burning Witch. Always finding new direction and incorporating a variety of influences stemming from his drone/rock roots to tintinnabuli, plain chant, pop, noise, books, art, and a long life of unstability and mayhem DAHLQUIST constantly reinvents ASVA, bringing in new collaborators, new techniques, and new instrumentation for each project. Members have included Brad Mowen (Burning Witch), Jessika Kenney, Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3), Toby Driver (Kayo Dot, Secret Chiefs 3), Greg Gilmore (Mother Love Bone) and a host of others. DAHLQUIST is well known as a bassist, recording and touring with SUNNO)), Burning Witch, Goatsnake, Loaded (w/Duff McKagen), the afore mentioned Asva, and his noise rock project Brokaw. His current focus includes honing his skills as a pseudo-liturgical organist and composing for film and dance, most recently scoring ‘Sunyata’ (prize winner at the Kodak/Eastman US Independent Film Festival) and ‘Sky Burial’ a ballet for film which will debut at the upcoming Australian Independent Film Festival, Spring 2012. His past work has been included in the major studio films ‘Contact’ and ‘First Kid’, as well as numerous television productions. His recorded work can be found on the Southern Lord, Web Of Mimicry, Important Records, Southern Records, Daymare, Virgin Records, and Sony imprints.

PHILIPPE PETIT is interested in soundtracks; even if he creates original music he’d rather be introduced as a “musical travel agent” than a composer. PETIT uses an Electric Psalterion, Hackbrett Cymbalum, Guitars + computer and synths to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. To second the machine he likes to move various glasses, or percussive objects, and take advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds. A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT has celebrated his 29th year of sharing his musical passions as the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp. PETIT has assembled what people call a dream-team of collaborators, joining Lydia Lunch, Murcof, Cindytalk or Faust onstage, and also recording with: Eugene S. Robinson (Oxbow), Foetus, Edward Ka-Spel, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti, My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Scanner, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Guapo, Leafcutter John, Simon Fisher Turner, and many more… He is also the founder of Strings Of Consciousness collective.

We agreed on this release last october, it took some time to finish it off and it was hard to keep this secret ! But this will finally be available early this summer. There will be preorders available soon (CD digisleeve edition of 1000 and LP in an edition of 500, 180gr black vinyl). Stay tuned !

Stratosphere is not just a studio project but also a live entity, and Ronald will play at the 4th edition of the “antwerp-ambient” festival, on saturday 28th of April (2012). A brand new track will be performed there !

The CD will be available that very weekend and Ronald will have copies with him.
As a little reminder: listen to “you will never destroy me

Also the first “Dreamscape” review – pretty positive – just appeared on the Vital Weekly 827:

Here’s a name from the past which I must admit I totally forgotten about. Stratosphere was a main player of ambient music in the early nineties, releasing an album on Amplexus and then disappeared again. The early work used analogue synthesizers and tape devices, but this new album sees him switch to guitar and bass. For a decade he didn’t do any music due to a ‘dramatic change’ in his life. That change also counts for his music. While still involved in atmospheric music, its undeniably much louder than before. Guitars are fed through a bunch of guitar pedals and it sounds louder and darker than before, especially in ‘You Will Never Destroy Me’, but as ‘There Is Still Hope’ says, every cloud has a silver lining and so despite the somewhat darker undercurrents of this album, there is still hope somewhere through gentle melodies singing, humming over the a black sea of drone like sounds. Each of the seven tracks get a lot of time to develop, perhaps at times too much, but I guess its inherent to this kind of music to go for a slow development. From the pure form of ambient music to the post rock variation of it. Not the biggest move in the world but surely a nice one and great to see him back on track. Let’s hope for some more. (FdW)

“Death Valley” available now on CD !

•March 24, 2012 • Leave a Comment

The collaborative effort between Thisquietarmy (Canada) & Yellow6 (UK), two of the most innovative guitarists in the current ambient scene, is now available on CD !
“Death” and “Valley”, the two parts of a same album, are now united on a double CD set packed in a mini gatefold sleeve with a 8 pages booklet. This edition also contains three bonus tracks: an outtake, a live track recorded at the Under The Snow Festival prior to the recording sessions and a remix by the mighty Fear Falls Burning.

Available now on the online shop !

It will also be available on digital in the coming days, as well as the bonus tracks as a digital EP for the vinyl owners who do not intend to buy the CD version but aim owning the bonus tracks as well.

Also, as announced months ago, if you already own both vinyls and are interested by the CD version, you can send the download codes of each LPs to get a discount on the CD ! Write to me (jerome @ bassesfrequences dot org) or to Eric or Jon, with “death valley discount” as subject.

This is an important chapter of the label that I’m closing here (in some way). I am very happy, and proud, to have been able to release this fantastic collaboration and succeed in releasing it in such different formats. It took quite some time, but at least I DID IT !
Strong, deep thanks to Eric, Jon and Dirk.

The second batch of CDR on ROD.

– The ROD program is discontinued –

Started early February, the Record-on-Demand program wasn’t able to offer all previous CDR releases at once. Here is a second batch of releases out of print in their original format: Bones Of Seabirds “Divinorum”, Pummeler “Soul Match extraordinaire” and “Elementality Revisited” – the remix album of Elementaural Research Project (aka Anders Peterson) ‘s “Elementality” – available again, but exclusively coupled with the “Elementality” CD as a CD/CDR set.

All three available in the coming days.

I am still figuring out how to have Tamagawa‘s “L’arbre aux fées” available on the ROD program due to its elaborated original packaging. But it WILL be available again, before summer.

DEMAIN ! Nadja + Off The International Radar Live @ Les Instants Chavirés, Montreuil

•March 19, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Andrew Roy – Bass
Don Kennedy – Guitar
Henry Sansom – Drums / Guitar
Aaron Dawson – Synthesizers / Rhythm Machine
8€ en prévente / 10€ sur place.
Stand des groupes et du label.
Au plaisir de vous y voir !
